Ocymum basilium basilium 'Sweet Basil'
Common Names: Basil

Description:
Sweet Basil is a classic kitchen herb, used in tomato sauce, pesto and salads. Start early indoors or outdoors after danger of frost. Basil tastes great in tomato and pasta dishes but it is also gives a sweetscented, minty aroma when crumbled over baked chicken, lamb, or fish. It blends well with garlic, thyme, and oregano. Crush dried leaves with your hand or in a mortar and pestle to release the herb's flavor

Recommendations:
- Sow in spring, placing three seeds in shallow holes spaced at 20 cm (8 in) intervals.

- Water well during the hot weather or cover the soil with a mulch of grass cuttings.

- After flowering, cut the stems back flush with the ground. Remove all the old foliage and put it on your compost heap or you will have lots more borage seedlings appearing in the same place next year.

- Use sprays of borage flowers and leaves are used to give a cool, cucumber-like flavor to summer drinks. Flowers are excellent eaten raw with tomatoes.

Problems:
It is difficult to transplant, you can stretch out the harvest by sowing three times at 4-week intervals.
