This is one of the best plants I have seen for butterflies and other insects which flock to the flowers. Large, billowy terminal inflorescences of numerous pale pinkish mauve florets appear mid to late summer. Joe Pye is beautiful swaying in the breeze singly or as a backdrop to other perennials and shrubs. Wet or moist locations in full sun are best, but it tolerates light shade. Grows 7-10', but you can shorten this height somewhat and create bushier plants by cutting the stems in half in early summer. Some say the plant was named after Joe Pye, an Indian medicine man who used the wildflower to treat typhoid fever, jopi. Cherokee women drank a tea of Joe Pye during pregnancy for added strength, and the hollow stems were used as straws by native Indians.
