Helleborus Niger ''
Common Names: Christmas Rose

Description:
The Christmas Rose has thick, dark-green glossy, finger-like evergreen leaves on short stems. Blooming begins near Christmas, with pure-white, single rose-like flowers on 6" stems. They are unaffected by cold temperatures and often self seed. H. niger is great in the well-drained woodland, either as a specimen or in a mass planting.

Recommendations:
- Plant in autumn to give them time to settle in before the frosts. If planting in pots, put the pots under cold frames since the roots are somewhat prone to freezing.

- Mulch the soil with pine bark or peat from late spring onwards. Let fruit ripen, since this will give you a lot of natural seeds. In very hot weather, water now and again and watch out for swarms of greenfly on the ends of young stems.

- Every three or four years, rejuvenate by dividing them, preferably in autumn. Water generously to encourage the plants to take.
